Felt Rose Pencil Topper
Felt Rose Pencil Topper – Super easy to make and a sweet gift

With Valentine’s day fast approaching, these sweet little Felt Rose Pencil Toppers are the perfect addition to any Valentine’s gift exchange.

In the beginning of the school year, the teacher’s usually send a note home letting parents know what they can and can’t bring to school. It used to be cupcakes and edible treats were the way to celebrate birthdays and holidays in the classroom; however, with the concern for food allergies, teacher’s are requesting different ways to celebrate.

Some ideas that teacher’s have mentioned are a book to donate to the class, pencils, little toys, and in a nut shell (pardon the nut pun) nothing edible.

Eureka, I’ve Got It

So considering the restrictions, it becomes a bit of a challenge to figure out a way to make Valentine’s day a little more special.

That’s where these simple and sweet little rolled rose pencil toppers come in. Since they’re very easy to make, you can get the kids to help out, but you may want to help with the hot glue. Or just use some good craft glue.

How To Make Felt Roses

One rose probably takes about 5 – 7 minutes to make. So you can make a bunch in a relatively short amount of time.

The first step is to cut out a felt circle. I use a small juice glass to trace out the shape, but any circular object will do. My circle measures about 1-1/2 – 2 inches across. The smaller the circle, the smaller the rose is going to be.

Then using your scissors, cut out a spiral shape out of the felt circle – making sure there’s a very gradual increase in the spiral width.

Felt Rose – To create your rolled felt rose, first make a spiral.

Next place your pipe cleaner edge onto the small spiral end. Add a little drop of hot glue to hold the pipe cleaner in place.

With the pipe cleaner attached, begin to roll up the felt end. The pipe cleaner should be in the center of the rose.

Felt Rose – Start rolling it up

Keep rolling up the felt and you’ll start to see it beginning to look like an actual rose. Every now and then add a little bit of glue to the inside of the rose to keep the felt together. I told you this was easy.

Once you’ve rolled up the rose, to keep the whole thing together glue the final flap to the back of the rose. That’s it!

Once the rose is dry (it’ll be pretty quick if you use hot glue, but longer if you use a traditional craft glue) you can wrap the pipe cleaner around a pencil.

Tips & Tricks

Before wrapping your rose onto the pencil, try adding some felt leaves to the back. Or even gluing a bead or little seed pearl to the center. These little embellishments add a sweet little touch to the roses.

Rolled felt roses are a super easy kid project and a relatively inexpensive craft. While they’re great for Valentine’s Day, Easter or Mother’s day, you can also use this craft to keep kids occupied on a rainy or snowy day.

All the supplies can be found at your local craft store. Average costs for felt, pipe cleaners and a pack of pencils will be about $5. Happy crafting!
