Lately, I’ve been interested in textile and fiber art and I recently learned how to make felt flowers. I was actually pretty surprised to see how quick and easy it really is.
Prepping The Felt Daisy
One daisy probably takes about 7 -10 minutes to make. The hardest part is cutting out all the felt. (Well, and trying not to burn your fingers with the hot glue.)
Step 1: Cut out the flower petals – Begin by cutting out a long rectangle of white felt and then cut small 3/4 inch pieces, so you’re left with 8 smaller rectangles.
Then using your scissors cut off the corners of one side of the felt and round the edge to create a petal (my finished petals were about 2 – 3/4 ” long and 1/2″ wide). Don’t do this to both sides, you’ll need the straight flat edge to adhere the petals to the center of the flower.
If you have curved scissors, creating rounded edges is super easy, but I just used regular straight-edged scissors.
Step 2: Cut the flower back – This step will help give your daisy a finished look. Using your scissors cut out a green felt circle – about the size of quarter.
Then add little cuts into the edge of the circle. This circle is used for the back of the flower and the cuts will make it easier to attach to the flower center. Set this aside for now.
Step 3. Cut the flower center – Using a yellow/orange color, cut out a 4 -1/2″ x 1-1/2″ piece of felt.
Then fold the felt in 1/2 and snip cuts into the folded edge of the felt. The cuts should be pretty close together. Once all the cuts are in, add a little strip of glue to the base to hold it together. (Sometimes I add the glue to the base before making the cuts, it makes it a little easier to handle)
Putting The Felt Daisy Together
You’re in the home stretch now, just a few more steps and you’ll be finished with your first felt daisy!
Step 4: Create the flower center – Starting at one edge, simply roll the felt up. Add a little dab of glue every now and again to keep the center together. but make sure to add glue to the very end.
Step 5: Adding the petals – Here comes the finger burning part – next, using the hot glue attach the petals to the daisy center. You want to apply the first set of four petals perpendicular to each other. So that you’re creating a plus sign. Then you add in the other petals between each of the established petals.
Step 6: Create the stem – For my flower I used wire flower stems, they look a little more realistic. But in a pinch, you could use a pipe cleaner. Cut the stems with a pair of wire cutters and then bend the end of the wire to create a loop. Then bend the loop down to make a flat base to attach to the daisy center.
Step 7: Finishing touch – Remember the green flower back? Poke the end of the stem through the center of the green circle. You may need to snip a little hole with your scissors.
Then using your hot glue gun, attach the stem loop to the back of your daisy. Next slide up the green circle and using a little more glue adhere the circle to the back of the daisy.
