I’m very lucky that my kids love to read. We go to the library at least every two weeks and check out a ton of books. When we get home, they usually sit down on the couch for a couple of hours and mow through them.
Because we’re now getting into chapter books, there’s always a need in our house for a bookmark. With St. Patrick’s Day on its way, I thought it might be fun to pull together some Shamrock Bookmarks.
How To Make Felt Shamrock Bookmarks
I’m going to warn you, there’s a tiny bit of sewing. Well, actually, it’s more like stringing, but a needle is involved. However, it’s such a small amount, I’m sure you’ll forgive me.
Step 1: Cut out the shamrock leaves – You’re going to need four 1.5″ x 1.5″ squares. Then simply fold the square and cut out a half a heart shape.
Step 2: Creating the shamrock – With your embroidery thread and needle, make a simple stitch at the base of the shamrock leaf. Then run the thread through each of the four leaves.
Be careful to not pull the thread all the way through. Leave enough of the thread on each side of the set of four leaves.
Then pull the thread to squeeze the shamrock leaves together and make a knot on the back.
Step 3: Making the bookmark – Cut a 8″ x 1.5″ piece of the burlap ribbon. To attach the shamrock to the ribbon, take one end of the embroidery thread on the back of the shamrock and thread your needle. Then take the end of the thread and poke it through the burlap bookmark. Do the same with the other thread end and then tie the two pieces together.
Step 4: Finishing Touch – Fold the ends of the bookmark over and add a little hot glue to hold everything together.
You can then take some time to embellish your bookmark with extra ribbon, buttons or even more shamrocks.
