Batty Rice Krispie Treats

Batty Rice Krispie Treats
Go batty this Halloween for some Cocoa Krispie Bat treats!

While these little Batty Rice Krispie Treats are super cute and really tasty. The act of making them is an exercise in frustration.

Like all great cooking adventures, the beginning is rosy and optimistic. However, by the time the 15th cookie wing snaps in half – I just want to crawl in a hole and forget I even thought of making these.

Damn you bats – I curse your cuteness!

Even though I don’t think it was necessary, I added some black food coloring to the marshmallow mix. My thought was that it would hide the white marshmallow color. Anyway, I mixed everything thoroughly to make the colors blend and evenly coat the cereal.

Stirring up something spooky and scrumptious.

Warning, this next part is messy…

With my hands covered in oil, I started to mold the shapes into balls. This is a little bit of a sticky disaster. It’s not a rolling motion, but more like packing all the cereal together. Make sure you have a plate or some wax parchment paper close by to set down the balls.

Next, I twisted apart oreos and then broke the cookies in half to create wings. I used the very thin oreos, since they were lighter and the heavier oreos drooped. Since the cookies are so thin, they have a tendency to snap apart and cause intense irritability. Many curse words begin to emerge.

After I was able to get the wings on, I stuck on the candy eyes and finished them off with two little chocolate chips ears.

This was a lonely kitchen journey.  I have a bad feeling if the kids were helping me, there would be a lot more tears (mainly mine) and several more curse words (probably my son).

Finally, after the struggle is over, I will say this, they’re super cute and they’re incredibly delicious. It’s chocolate, what’s not to love? Was it worth it? You bat-cha it was. (Ok, I made myself cringe a little with that pun.)
